Best Selling Electric Grills

Electric grills offer all the benefits of traditional gas or charcoal grills but without costly and time-consuming fuel. Generally, they’re smaller and more portable so cooking up enough hot dogs for a crowd at a barbecue at the park or even just getting a nice set of grill marks on a single piece of chicken no longer requires cumbersome equipment.

Whether you don’t have the space for a gas or charcoal grill, you’re not ready to invest in one, or you want something that’s simpler than firing up a traditional grill, there are plenty of reasons to opt for an electric grill over charcoal or gas.

They’re also way less smokey, so you can use many of them inside. This means that grilling isn’t just for summertime, and let’s be honest–sometimes leaning over sizzling coals or plumes of fire and smoke when it’s already scorching out isn’t actually that fun or appetizing. Electric grills bring the heat, but just for the food.

Finding the best electric grill

Electric grills offer quick, long-running operation but must be plugged into a power outlet.

  • If you live in an apartment or an area that can’t accommodate charcoal or gas, you can still cook out with an electric grill.
  • Electric grills have no open flames. Instead, they have grates that heat up — and quickly — when the grill is turned on.
  • The higher the wattage, the more powerful the grill and more evenly distributed the heat will be. Keep in mind that the wattage should be relative to the size of the cooktop.
  • They work well, they’re low maintenance, and they produce great-tasting food.
  • They definitely produce a different flavor quality than gas or charcoal grills.
  • The best electric grills can produce juicy, caramelized, seared-to-perfection meals.
  • Some electric grills offer infrared cooking to eliminate flare-ups and prevent hot or cold spots on the grill.
  • You can produce some excellent cookout cuisine using ceramic briquettes and a good marinade.
  • For easy cleanup, look for grills with removable or dishwasher-safe grate.

Best Foods to Cook on an Electric Grill

Here are some of the best tasting foods you can try on an electric grill.

  • Steak. Steaks are one of the most cooked foods on any grill and will taste great on an electric grill.
  • Hamburgers. You can easily prepare some of your favorite burgers on an electric grill. Cooking a hamburger on an electric grill takes about 6-10 minutes.
  • Hot Dogs. Cooking hot dogs on an electric grill is a simple process that takes about 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Shrimp and Fish. It will be full of flavor, tender, and goes great with rice and vegetables. Grilled shrimp and fish is among the healthiest foods you can eat and is high in protein and low in calories.
  • Vegetables. Vegetables on an electric grill are a favorite of mine. Among the common grilled vegetables include asparagus, zucchini, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, corn, carrots and peppers.

Types of Electric Grills

Electric grills come in a few different types: tabletop, full-size, and convertible. Tabletop grills are small and typically designed for indoor-use only. They’re smokeless and incredibly easy to use, but you won’t get the typical grilling experience.

If you’re looking for an electric grill that’ll rival your charcoal or gas grill, then opt for a full-size standing electric grill. Many of these can be used indoors or outdoors because they product little to no smoke.

When choosing an electric grill, look at the work surface. There are several considerations here: material, form, and functionality. It’s also great if the working panel is removable as it will be so much easier to clean the grill. If the work surfaces are stationary, then it is important to observe safety precautions when cleaning them, because rinsing them in water is not recommended.

Convertible grills can switch from tabletop to full-size through the use of a large base unit. Simple add the tabletop grill to the base and you’ve got a more traditional grill setup—the best of both worlds. Another electric grill you’ll come across is a built-in grill. These are installed into an outdoor kitchen for easy grilling and prep-work.

How Do Electric Barbecue Grills Work?

Electric barbecue grills use electricity as fuel to heat a heating element. This element usually sits below the cooking surface. Most electric grills have a slightly angled cooking surface to allow liquid fat to run along the ridges and into a drip tray. Some also have a food preparation area to the side to allow you to place food ready to cook if you’re doing it in batches.

Electric grills will come with a thermostat that allows you to alter the cooking temperature very precisely. Some basic models may only have a low, medium and high setting, but many premium brands let you set the temperature to an exact degree.

To use an electric grill, simply plug it into an electrical outlet and set the temperature. Wait for the grill to reach cooking temperature, which should take around 8-10 minutes. Then you can then grill your food just like you would on a gas or charcoal grill.

Tips For Using An Electric Grill

While electric grills are durable and low-maintenance, use these tips to ensure you get the most out of your purchase.

  • If you’re using a portable electric tabletop grill, be sure to place it where you want to use it before plugging it in. Do not try to move it after plugging in the grill and it becomes hot.
  • Heat to the desired temperature before you begin to cook your food.
  • They cook very evenly so there are not really any hotspot” with an electric grill. No need to move your food around for even cooking.
  • As with all extremely hot surfaces, keep children away while using.
  • Clean up is easy with a non-abrasive cleaner or just use soap and water.

Another benefit of an electric grill? Better temperature control and an easy start-up process. With an indoor grill, you just plug and press an on button— nothing like the long process of lighting charcoal briquettes. Most outdoor grills are cleaned by burning off residue over high heat and scraping with a metal brush. Indoor grills are almost unilaterally coated in a durable nonstick coating that can stand up to higher temperatures that makes clean-up as easy as wiping with a damp cloth.

Your possibilities are endless so it’s time to grill and chill.
