Outdoor kitchens and grill islands offer a variety of benefits that make them a popular addition to homes. But they can be expensive with prices exceeding $15,000. So what is a good alternative to an outdoor kitchen or grill island on a budget? Lets compare outdoor kitchens with pizza ovens.

What Are Some Benefits Of An Outdoor Kitchen?

Although expensive, outdoor kitchens are popular. They can offer a variety of benefits that make them a great addition to your home. Here are some of the key benefits of having an outdoor kitchen:

  • Increased Living Space: Outdoor kitchens extend your living space to the outdoors, providing an additional area for cooking, dining, and entertaining.
  • Enhanced Entertaining: Outdoor kitchens are perfect for hosting guests, providing a relaxed atmosphere for socializing and dining, while also keeping indoor spaces clean.
  • Versatility: Outdoor kitchens can be customized to fit your specific needs and preferences, including the types of appliances, seating areas, and other features you want to include.
  • Convenience: Outdoor kitchens provide a convenient option for cooking and entertaining, especially during the summer months when you may want to spend more time outside.
  • Healthier Cooking: Cooking outdoors can be a healthier option, as it can help to reduce indoor cooking odors and smoke, while allowing for fresh air and natural light.

The Cons Of An Outdoor Kitchen

While outdoor kitchens and grill islands can be a great addition to your home, there are also some potential cons that you should consider before deciding to purchase one. Here are some of the disadvantages of outdoor kitchens.

  • Cost: Outdoor kitchens can be expensive to install, especially if you want high-end appliances, custom features, or professional installation. You will also need to factor in ongoing maintenance costs, such as cleaning and repairs.
  • Weather-Related Issues: Depending on where you live, weather-related damage can be a concern for outdoor kitchens. Exposure to rain, snow, and extreme temperatures can cause wear and tear on appliances and other components, leading to costly repairs or replacements.
  • Limited Use: Depending on your climate and the season, you may not be able to use your outdoor kitchen year-round. This can limit your return on investment and make it less practical for some homeowners.
  • Pest Control: Outdoor kitchens can attract pests such as ants, flies, and rodents. Proper pest control measures, such as regular cleaning and sealing, may be necessary to prevent infestations.
  • Safety: Cooking with fire and gas appliances can pose some safety risks, especially if children or pets are present. Proper safety measures, such as fire extinguishers and protective barriers, should be taken to reduce the risk of accidents.

Overall, while outdoor kitchens can be a great addition to your home, it’s important to carefully consider the potential drawbacks before deciding to invest in one.

The Cons Of A Pizza Oven

Seriously, do you think there could be something bad about a pizza oven? Well, it took me a while to think of some cons, especially when eating pizza, but I came up with a few.

A small pizza oven may require an area of around 4 feet by 4 feet, while larger models may require up to 8 feet by 8 feet or more. But it’s still considerably smaller than the area needed for a outdoor kitchen. It’s important to consider not just the size of the oven itself, but also the space needed for proper ventilation, safety clearance, and any additional work or preparation areas that you may need.

Cost, Space Requirements, Learning Curve

  1. Cost: Pizza ovens can be a little on the expensive side. Especially if you’re looking for a high end model. Additionally, there could be additional cost of installation and ongoing maintenance.
  2. Space requirements: Pizza ovens will take up some space. But in terms of the oven itself and the surrounding area needed for use, its still minimal. If you have limited outdoor space, a pizza oven may not be a feasible option.
  3. Learning curve: Using a pizza oven requires some skill and practice, particularly when it comes to managing the temperature and timing the cooking process. This can be a challenge for those who are new to using this type of oven.
  4. Time-consuming: While pizza ovens can cook pizza quickly, they require a bit of time and effort to prepare and heat up. This may not be ideal if you’re looking for a quick and easy cooking option.
  5. Weather-dependent: Pizza ovens are typically designed for outdoor use, which means that they can be impacted by weather conditions such as direct sunlight, heat, wind, rain and snow. This can make it difficult to use the oven during certain times of the year or in certain locations.

The Benefits Of Having An Outdoor Space

Outdoor spaces can be as simple as a patio and a BBQ grill. An outdoor kitchen can range from simple setups with just a grill and a few accessories, to more elaborate designs with multiple cooking stations, seating areas, and other features. They are often used for outdoor entertaining and can be a popular addition to homes with spacious outdoor areas.

Of course, there are some drawbacks to outdoor kitchens as well. The biggest concern is the initial cost of the item and installation and maintenance cost. And lets not forget the potential for weather related damage.

That leads us to pizza ovens. A pizza oven is a great way to extend your living space to the outdoors and create a functional and enjoyable cooking and dining experience right on your patio. It’s a real affordable option to a outdoor kitchen or grill island.

If you’ve considered investing in a pizza oven, you’ve probably heard of the market leader. Ooni Pizza Ovens. With a range of gas and wood fired ovens and accessories, Ooni is a brand that can easily handle your homemade pizza needs.

So without any delay, let’s dig in!

What I Love About An Outdoor Pizza Oven

Who doesn’t love the convenience of a pizza oven and the flavor of a great homemade pizza? I definitely enjoy using one of these Ooni pizza ovens now and then over something on the grill. Try one and you might become hooked too. If you’re someone who enjoys the art of BBQ and you want to experience a quality meal on a quality grill, try a pizza oven.

Maybe pizza ovens are a little pricey

One thing I think you should know about pizza ovens is that they can be more that $800. That’s on the high end of affordability for many people. My advice is to start out with the entry level oven priced around $300. One of the advantages of Ooni pizza ovens is that they are relatively affordable compared to other high-end pizza ovens on the market. Bake a few pizzas with it for one complete season and then decide if you want to switch to a higher end pizza oven.

What if you really just prefer steaks and hamburgers?

I talk a lot about cooking a variety of meats on a grill. If you are mainly a burger guy or gal, a pizza oven may not be the best choice. If you enjoy making pizza or cooking outdoors, a pizza oven could be a great addition to your outdoor space. However, if you rarely cook or eat pizza, it may not be worth the investment. For simple grilling, try the classic Weber Kettle grill.

It’s just a cool way to bake a homemade pizza

I am confident an Ooni pizza oven could be a long term solution for you. I am a big fan of the Weber grill Spirit ii and it does a really good job but get the Weber Spirit if you can. To get the best from a Spirit grill, you need to make sure you are going to be regularly cooking for 1-4 people. Otherwise you’ve just bought a great grill with features you are not using.

But they are cool. You will probably have people asking you what it’s called and where you bought it. In my experience, if you enjoy grilling, you will enjoy using a pizza oven. Ooni is the best styles of ovens you can buy. Overall, I think it has one of the coolest designs and its worth the price tag. You can buy these right from the manufactures sites, or Amazon. I have also seen a few pizza ovens at Home Depot and Lowe’s. Wal Mart especially has started to stock pizza ovens in the last couple of years but they are mostly store specific models that you can not find elsewhere.

When To Buy A Pizza oven?

Once you’ve decided you need a pizza oven, it’s tempting to purchase it right away. However, waiting for the right moment can mean big savings. April through July is the time of year when many of us want a new items for our outdoor space and demand is at its peak. You can usually find deals online and at your local store especially for the tradition Memorial Day weekend kick off to summer.

Memorial Day weekend and July 4th are your best times to find a good deal. Big box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot will have ovens on sale and sometimes with free delivery.

Ooni Pizza Oven is my choice

There are many different types of pizza ovens available on the market, each with their own unique features and advantages. My choice is the Ooni Karu 16 Multi Fuel Outdoor Pizza Oven. It’s priced right around $700. Remember, it’s always a good idea to set a budget and prioritize the features and materials when planning your outdoor space.

This oven roars with temperatures of up to a massive 950°F: twice that of a normal domestic oven! The Karu 16 outdoor pizza oven will be ready to go in 15 minutes and can cook authentic stone baked pizza. Giving you more time to grill and chill in your backyard while enjoying great pizza!

Should You Get A Pizza Oven Or Outdoor Kitchen?

Whether to get a pizza oven or an outdoor kitchen depends on your individual circumstances, preferences, and budget. Here are some factors to consider:

  1. Usage: If you’re primarily interested in cooking pizza, then a pizza oven may be the better option. However, if you want a more versatile cooking space for a variety of meals, an outdoor kitchen may be a better fit.
  2. Space: If you have limited outdoor space, a pizza oven may be a better option as it takes up less space than a full outdoor kitchen. However, if you have ample space and want a complete outdoor cooking and entertaining area, an outdoor kitchen may be a better fit.
  3. Budget: Pizza ovens can be less expensive than a full outdoor kitchen. However, if you want a high-end pizza oven or are looking to include many features and appliances in your outdoor kitchen, the cost can add up quickly.
  4. Lifestyle: If you enjoy hosting large gatherings and cooking for a lot of people, an outdoor kitchen may be a better option as it offers more cooking and prep space. However, if you prefer smaller, more intimate gatherings or only cook for a few people at a time, a pizza oven may be more than sufficient.
  5. Maintenance: Both pizza ovens and outdoor kitchens require regular maintenance to ensure they are working properly and to prolong their lifespan. However, an outdoor kitchen may require more maintenance and cleaning due to the larger number of appliances and features.

Well, back to the original question. Should you just get an outdoor kitchen?

In summary, the decision to get a pizza oven or an outdoor kitchen ultimately depends on your personal preferences, space limitations, and budget. Consider your usage, lifestyle, and maintenance needs to help determine which option is best for you. I admit that I’ve never owned an outdoor kitchen and that may be why I prefer a pizza oven. Honestly, outdoor kitchens look great. But I don’t think it would be a good investment for me.

I’m happy firing up my pizza oven for a quick meal for up to 4 people with its solid design, powerful heat, space saving features and easy mobility. If you’re looking for a portable and affordable pizza oven that can produce delicious, restaurant quality pizzas, an Ooni pizza oven is definitely worth considering.

Your possibilities are endless so it’s time to grill and chill.
