Shibumi Shade Original and Shibumi Mini

Last updated on May 28th, 2023 at 08:53 am

The Shibumi Shade has caught the attention of beach goers who need a sun shade that’s easy to set up, take down and provides the sun protection you need. And unlike most beach shades, when the wind picks up it won’t blow away! Shibumi makes a beach sun shade that works like a flowing beach canopy. The simple design is really just a long pole that sticks into the sand and forms an arch and the fabric is held up by the wind.

The Shibumi Shade original and the Shibumi mini beach shade are both designed to float effortlessly in the breeze. As little as 3 mph of wind is all it takes to keep the canopy floating comfortably. Because of the unique design, the Shibumi Shade won’t fly away in a strong wind or tumble down the beach like the other shades and beach umbrellas you have seen.

What is a Shibumi Sun Shade?

Two brothers, Dane and Scott Barnes, and their friend Alex Slater were on a summer vacation in North Carolina. This trip to the Carolina coast involved the usual task of carrying umbrellas and heavy canopy tents to the beach and setting them up. They realized that 10×10 pop up tents were just too awkward and heavy to carry and beach umbrellas were flimsy and cheaply made.

So, they put their heads together and designed a lightweight shade canopy. After a few trips to the local hardware store and watching YouTube videos to learn how to sew, the very first Shibumi Shade canopy was created.

That week at the beach saw countless people come up and asking them where they got it. It was this interest which inspired a year of late nights as they perfected the design into what it is today.

More about the Shibumi sun shade

The term Shibumi is a Japanese Zen term that is defined as the ability to achieve maximum effect with the minimum means. It was coincidentally the name of their student housing while attending UNC Chapel Hill. They thought it was the perfect name for their new beach tent design.

This sun shade is basically made of two parts. A 17’ x 9’ piece of fabric and 2 aluminum poles that connect to make a 25’ long pole that forms into an arch when inserted into the sand. The free-flowing polyester sheet is held up entirely by the breeze and is said to “work with the wind, not against it”. How much breeze do you need? About 3 mph is all that is needed and that’s usually not a problem at any location you want to set up.

From Shibumi Shade: “We’ve improved the beach experience by working with the wind, not against it. And we continue to innovate to make the original wind-powered beach shade even better. After years of development and innovation, Shibumi Shade is now quieter, stronger, and provides more sun protection than ever before. We believe in leaving the beach better than we found it. That’s why the Shibumi Shade canopy is now made from 40% recycled plastic.” It’s better for you and better for the environment.

The Shibumi Beach Shade only comes in one color, the two-toned blue, but it does come in two sizes. The mini is meant for 1-2 people and the original can fit 4-6. It is 40% made out of recycled plastic and offers sun protection of UPF 50+. These shades are a little pricey but worth it at around $200 for the mini size and $290 for the original large size. There are a few competitor models you may want to consider that will be right around $125-$175, but I haven’t found one that compares in quality to the Shibumi.

Shibumi Shade Set Up

It’s one of the easiest shades to set up and if you have ever set up a pop up canopy, its even faster than that!

Many beach goers can set the shade up by themselves in 4-8 minutes. Connect the poles together to form a 25’ long pole. Next, thread the pole through the canopy loop until the fabric is evenly spaced across the pole. Be careful during this step as the polyester is lightweight and a piece of the fabric could snag on a pole connector and tear. Wrap the elastic bands around the pole and snap them into place to prevent the polyester from sliding on the pole.

Next, you place the poles perpendicular to the direction of the wind so that the canopy can catch the breeze. Stick one end of the pole about 8 inches into the sand and bend the other end until the center of the arch measures about 7 feet high. Then dig the second pole about 8 inches into the sand and fill the carrying bag with sand and position it in the front of the tent. This will act as a counterweight to prevent swaying during any extreme windy conditions.

Shibumi Shade Review & Set Up by Beach Guy Gear

When your beach day is over and you’re ready to pack up, you’ll just need to remove the fabric from the pole and take the poles out of the sand. Be careful not to cause any nicks and tears in the canopy fabric. The Shibumi Shade is packed away in the carrying case and you’re headed back home.

Shibumi Shade Alternatives and Knock Offs

Can you find a good Shibumi knock off? Probably not. You can find alternatives with similar design and sandbags but they don’t really compare. The Shibumi knock offs are usually much heavier to lug to the beach and they are more complicated to set up.

I have used many canopies over the years, but I’ve never seen one as light and portable as the Shibumi Beach Shade. They call it the world’s best beach shade. Well, I have to say yes it is.

The one objection to a Shibumi shade that I hear most often is the price. People agree it’s a great idea, but over priced. So are there cheaper alternatives out there? Of course there are but it will be up to you to decide if the savings are worth it.

One of the popular alternatives is to just use an umbrella. Easy to carry and gets the job done. However, umbrellas blow away easily and if you plan to use an umbrella, you will likely need a stand for it. It’s cheaper and will provide some shade. Shibumi shades give you more shade than any umbrella I’ve ever seen and they are smaller and lighter to carry.

Another concern is that these shades are banned at some beaches. According to the Shibumi Shades website, these sun shades are allowed on every beach in the United States except Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, SC and Rehoboth and Bethany Beach, DE.

Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina only allow beach umbrellas between Memorial Day and Labor Day but Shibumi Shades are allowed in the off-season. Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach, Delaware only permit traditional umbrellas year round.

Popular Alternatives and Knock Off Shades

Here are some Shibumi alternative products you should consider if price is a factor in your decision.

Shibumi Shade DIY

A knock off Shibumi is still a knock off. You can find a few Youtube and TikTok videos out there to make your own Shibumi Shade DIY. But I can’t really see saving any money doing so and materials will probably add up to over $100 anyway. Sure, you can purchase a couple poles, some ripstop polyester fabric and sit down for a few hours of sewing and it may be worth it to some folks but not me. And you can certainly find a Shibumi alternative or a simple sun shade on Amazon for less than $100.

What I Love About the Shibumi Shade

The design is cool and fun and it’s a well-made beach tent. It doesn’t use the typical metal frame needed to support a canopy and the result is a lightweight sun shade that weighs just 4 pounds It won’t fly away in a strong gust or go tumbling down the beach like we’ve all seen with pop up tents and canopies. It can easily be set up by one person which is a feature I always look for in any shade or canopy I’m going to take to the beach. And I love that fact that Shibumi Shades are made right here in the good ol’ USA.

Ok, maybe it does get a little noisy in a strong wind

One thing I think you should know about this shade is the noise it makes. It’s not a concern of mine, but some people do notice the noise it makes. When the wind is going around 20 mph, it does get a little loud. And the company actually suggests you consider taking it down when the wind speed is above 20 mph. You will hear it when directly under the shade but won’t hear it from a few feet away. For me, this is not an issue, but for some others, it could be.

What if there is no wind?

And of course you could be at the beach on a very calm day. I will be honest, the Shibumi shade with no wind doesn’t work so well. The fabric just kind of floats down on you and won’t pick up until the wind does. No wind at the beach is not common, so this has really not been a concern of mine either.

It’s just a cool beach shade

Overall, i think it has one of the coolest designs and its worth the price tag. You can buy these from ShibumiShade.com or Amazon. I have not seen the Shibumi Shade at Walmart or other big box retailers like Home Depot or Lowes.

I am confident this beach shade will be a long term solution for you. If you have ever lost a shade or canopy at the beach when the wind picks up, you will appreciate the design of the Shibumi shade. You will probably have people coming up and asking you what it’s called and where you bought it. In my experience I would say its the best beach shade you can buy.

Your possibilities are endless so it’s time to grill and chill.
